Yesterday was Sunday I mean the day after Saturday and many of us there at SXSW were having a party ou tried to have one.
And there in Austin at 2.00 am we have had to set clocks ahead 1 hour.
Nevertheless, I attended some conf : one about the impact of humor in the advertising. The speaker was a guy from Cisco who is also a performer, a showman. Can’t remember the name. Gonna tell you later. He told that it’s fruitful to make people share their funny ideas or weird ones, use comedy to sell products. First identify the problem, then listen to complaints, exxaggerate the consequences and hire a guy from film school/ improv theatre. (Ads on Cisco blades or data centers are funny thanks to this)…!
Then « A conversation with Paul Reubens » : the creator of Pee Wee Herman character and show. A famous one man show and actor. I will tell more later. It’s not the subject. Actually yes, it is. He told that he is from the older generation and told us how he uses twitter, FB, and the social networks to do his job. Was funny too.

Antoher word will be « small ».
I mean the word is small. You can meet people there you already met in Berlin, Barcelona, etc…
Midday, lunch with the French guys from the French SXSW, Atelier, Cap Digital, Futur en Seine, etc… and Rodrigo, Carlos, Nadya, Quentin, Erwan, Rudy of Dotopen (a Belgian guy located in Barcelone who organises the Mobile Monday and here the Apps Circus), and many more.
Mike Tyson was there to make the promotion of a game (no, I don’t know him personnally :
I went to the Tech Cocktail party : some Austin startups were showing their products on small booths. Met Americans people who know Angers, Nantes, Saumur, The Loire Valley…
And came back to the hotel to sleep. Today Interactive at SXSW begins and the delegation from Angers/ Nantes is there.

Second day at SXSW : I don’t want to talk about the lines, the queues, wait…. You understand that these are the main words here. The new thing I tried was be on line to come in restaurants (overcrowded) at night as well as do not enter in some places ’cause you needed to be in the list (4sq party yesterday for instance which welcomed more than 500 people).
Before the evening, I tried to attend a conf on the Obama strategy for the American Startups. I didn’t succeed because I never find the right bus that could have droven me there. ATT Center is north of the City…Anyway…
So meantime, I went on walking a little and at the Capitol, people were demonstrating against Perry Governor : he wants to cut fundings allowed to the education. Music, families everywhere, water given to everyone, funny slogans, friendly demonstration.
In the afternoon, I learned about the 5 secrets to be a killer elevator pitch and some people went on stage to make their 2 minutes pitch and received advice from the speaker Joshua Baer and a VC.
To summarize, those secrets are :
- focus on the problem
- tell a story
- use the 4th grade language (be simple)
- have a tailer closing
- practice and practice.
I run to another conf in Sheraton (the events are not all located at ACC) and hear about publishers/advertises/web site… Nothing new.
I was just walking to come back to the ACC Convention Center and I came in a place called Esther’s Follies. I entered there, satwithout queuing and the show beginned : Doug loves movies with Doug Benson. This guy welcomed artists, movie makers on stage. Very funny even if sometimes I was lost. (Paul movie :Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) reunite for the comedy adventure Paul as two sci-fi geeks whose pilgrimage takes them to America’s ..).A totally weird movie.
And Super, another weird film. (An average guy (Wilson) takes on the pseudo-superhero alter ego of The Crimson Bolt, after watching his wife (Tyler) fall under the spell of a charming drug dealer. Lacking super powers, he compensates by swinging a trusty wrench.).
What else ? As day goes by, more and more people here in Austin : the interactive will begin tomorrow and it’s a great event. There are already bands playing music everywhere but music festival will begin on the March 15 and will attract more people. Don’t be agoraphobic if you plan to be in Austin these days !
Social networks and the smarphones are very useful : thanks to Twitter that was shown first time here soem years ago, I knew that people from Belgium were there and we will meet. You also know about the parties where your friends are or might be. I didn’t meet the French guys of French SXSW but I am ready today to be at Fado Irish bar where we gather (You know that a new Cantine has been built in Austin !)

Incredible event, incredible SXSW. And I’m only at the beginning of it! So incredible that here they organise a conversation between beginners and veterans of SXSW…

This is great to be droven to your hotel or to the various places where there are events in Austin !
I queued up to have a SXXpress film pass (no photo)…For what purpose did I wait? -> answer below.
I didn’t queue up at the FrenchSXSW lunch : I was the first at Fado Irish pub, the meeting place for French people. There I met people from French Startups, from Cap Digital, from l’Atelier (I was interviewed as the others) , from La Cantine Paris and Nadya of Mandala Games and Erwan of Doyoubuzz of Nantes joined us. 3 others Western France companies of the Win Atlantic programme will arrive on Sunday. After Paris, Nantes, Rennes, French guys set up a new Cantine in Austin
Then walked back to the conference convention center. And attended some conferences. (Hard to attend some events on the same time : tip is to choose before coming here). There are everywhere some booths or pods where you can read on tactile screens the schedules.You can also recharge in various places your phone ou ou laptop… Twitting and foursquaring are the main ways to communicate here. I like it much…
End of the day : it was worth waiting on line -again ! I queued up to attend the Premiere of The Source Code directed by Duncan Jones. Avec Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga. An action thriller centered on a soldier who wakes up in the body of an unknown man and discovers he’s part of a mission to find the bomber …
Not so bad, but a kind of »copy » of Avatar, I guess so. The audience liked it much, they were fond of the director (many geeks inside the Paramount Theatre).
Jake Gyllenhaal is really cute and funny. After the film projection, the team of the director, actors and writer stood on stage to answer the questions.
After that it was time to come back to the convention center to… queue to take the right shuttle to go to my hotel. On the walk, I saw people still on line to purchase the Ipad 2 at the Apple store and I saw people everywhere inside bars or outside them, music is everywhere. SXSW is also an event dedicated to music, as well as interactive which will open next monday.
